My Post-trip reflection:)
Hey Singapore!!I came back from Karimun on Saturday. Well, I certainly felt that I have matured a lot after my trip. For instance, my perspective of this world has really changed after I directly felt the impact of corruption in Karimun:(. Although this incident definitely dampened everyone's mood, we quickly forgotten about it after our trek up Mt. Jantan which was approximately 439m high! The trek was really a test of how much one could endure. We had to go up very steep and slippery slopes, go through thick vegetation and also get down and dirty by grabbing onto the tree roots to prevent ourselves from slipping. The last few metres of the trek to the summit was really gruelling. We had to use a rope to pull ourselves up and even make way to those who were going down the mountain. One of my classmates even torn his pants in the process and we had to turn away to erhmmm protect his modesty. Hahahs:p. After resting for 30 mins at the summit, where we had to balance ourselves so that we wouldn't slip down, we went down the mountain reluctantly. We had to go down more slippery slopes and cross many small streams. Balancing on the rocks while crossing the streams was really difficult as the rocks were wet. I really felt embarrassed when the instructor had to hold my hand many times so that I could go down the slope faster. When the slopes were really slippery, we had to slide down on our butts and this really made my pants muddy. But, we couldn't care less. At times, I really felt like giving up, but I told myself to go on otherwise I'll never get down the mountain. After many hours, we finally reach a proper road and saw civilisation. We also passed the waterfall which can only be described with one word-beautiful! When we reached our final point where food and drinks were waiting for us, I really felt like giving a shout of joy! I gulped down uncountable cups of soft drinks till I was really full. We even saw a monkey while we were resting! Never will I trek a mountain again, I told myself as I was suffering from the aftermath. Just as we were leaving on the wooden buses( it was our transport the entire time)two persons from 3A finally finished their trek and came to join us. Everyone clapped for them as we knew it was not easy. After a quick wash-up at the hotel(the worst I have been to),we assembled and had our dinner. The food was really horrible! Anyway, we went to the pasar malam after our dinner. We were warned not to purchased any food as the hawkers were not hygienic. There was nothing much that could be bought from there as everything could be found in Singapore. The only difference was that the things were dirt cheap! Although we were given one hour to shop, we spent most of our time walking back and forth while waiting for time to pass. When we returned back to the hotel, everyone was dead tired and very soon, I slipped into slumber land:). The next day, we woke up at 6am Singapore time. We assembled at 6.30am at the hotel lounge and then had breakfast at the hotel restaurant. The food was much better except that I saw a cockroach nymph on scuttling on the floor. Ew! After breakfast, my class went to the Tidal Village School where we split ourselves into different groups. W taught then simple English through shapes and nursery rhymes and also personal hygiene like brushing their teeth properly. Not only that, we organised some ice-breaking games like dog and bone. What really startled me was that the kids did not understand a single world of English. I expected them to at least know a little English! At the school, we were also given some of the Indonesian specialities like kueh and a kind of noodles with very spicy curry. One work to describe it-sedap! To quench our thirst, we had fresh cold coconut juice which was very popular among my classmates. We went back to the hotel after our de-briefing to collect our luggage. We were also given some time to make last-minute purchases at the Sheng Siong supermarket. Then, we headed to the immigration centre to board our ferry. When I reached HarbourFront centre, I was really relieved to have survived the trip. Never have I missed Singapore so much:)) back to top? |

The Day Before The Trip To Karimun
It is the day before I embark on my learning journey to Karimun-an island I have never heard of in the first place. I have mixed feelings about the trip because first of all, I have never gone to a foreign land without my parents. Secondly, this will be my very first trip to Indonesia, a country I have heard so much about but never been to it.Thirdly, I am curious to know what sort of experience I will gain from this trip-good or bad. I am really looking forward to this trip because it will be my maiden trip to Indonesia, finally, without the constant watch of my parents:)! I really wish to gain some valuable lessons from this trip like learning how to be independent and also appreciate what I have now. Also, I believe that this trip will definitely benefit me a lot because I may become a mature person in the process:).
